Roma integration remains a key issue in the new EU Roma Strategic Framework 2020-2030, as the recent global energy crisis that began in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the extreme vulnerability of excluded and marginalized Roma communities to negative socio-economic impacts. However, overall progress in Roma integration over the past 10 years has been limited, even if education is the area that has developed the most.
The ACADE_ME project aims to create an opportunity to strengthen actions to overcome the ongoing failures in Roma integration by placing education at the center of the fight against anti-Gypsyism, discrimination and social exclusion.
The ACADE_ME consortium scheme, based on the assessments of the previous framework and the annual analyses of the implementation of the national strategies in Slovenia, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria and the Republic of Serbia, offers a practical approach to combat antigypsyism in education through:
  • Increase access to knowledge and data on the impact of antigypsyism in education, especially among teachers and social integration actors. Develop comprehensive materials to combat discrimination against Roma students and increase the capacity of at least 300 teachers and professionals in community service centers and other local Roma integration structures.
  • Capacity building of at least 180 Roma with higher education to establish and strengthen 6 national academic clubs of Roma women to promote positive change in the community and become ambassadors against discrimination.
  • Raising awareness both within and outside Roma communities, with a strong emphasis on the education of young Roma, as education is a critical factor for understanding contemporary reality and social integration.
  • Developing the capacity of 60 Roma with higher education (especially women) to become influential figures of positive change through the creation of an initial comprehensive library of positive stories.
