An inter-school debate presented the views of young people on the topic “Should young people vote”
On 06.06, in Vasil Levski Secondary School, Valchi Dol, a student debate was held between students from the Professional High School of Agriculture and Forestry, Stefan Karadzha, and Vasil Levski Secondary School, Valchi Dol. The students debated on the topic: “Should young people vote”.
The teams:
Students from two schools took part in the inter-school debate – Professional High School of Agriculture and Forestry, Stefan Karadzha village and “Vasil Levski” Secondary School, Valchi dol. Their enthusiasm and excitement did not go unnoticed, their desire to defend their position leading the way throughout.
The moderator of the debate was the history teacher Maria Mihaleva.
The debate turned into a very lively discussion as it became clear that although they are still students, they already understand and are interested in the topic of elections. Both teams actively defended their theses “For” and “Against” young people to vote, ultimately the argument helped to reach the conclusions that if we are not active, vigilant and properly informed by independent sources, we will not be able to build a society on our own , in which to live freely and successfully.
The topic of media and fake news was also touched upon, which in today’s age of advanced technology is hard to discern and we all need to be trained to recognize fake sources of information. The students also touched on the topic of freedom of speech, right to protest and other democratic values necessary to build a democratic society.
Although they are still young and will be voting in just a few years, students are informed that they can both elect and hold our politicians accountable because they must work in the interest of their people. We must all vote and have the right to seek responsibility from those to whom we delegate the management of our country and who will represent and protect the interests of Bulgaria in Europe.
The inter-scholl debate is part of the project “EMPOWEREU: Fostering participation of youth and vulnerable groups in the EU elections” funded by the European Parliament.
