Romani Week 2022: Towards zero segregation in education in Europe

Center Amalipe joined the Romani Week 2022 series of activities co-organizing the  event “Towards zero segregation in education in Europe” within the Nosegregation project. The event took place in the European Parliament on May 19th form 14.00 to 16.20 PM.

The event was organised jointly by the Center for Advocacy and Human Rights (CADO) in Romania, European Roma Grassroots Organisations Network (ERGO) in Brussels, Fundación Secretariado Gitano (FSG) in Spain, Amalipe Center for Interethnic Dialogue and Tolerance (Amalipe) in Bulgaria and the Council of Europe.

The objective of the event was twofold: on the one hand, it facilitated discussions on the challenges in preventing, eliminating and/or sanctioning segregation in education at national level; and, on the other hand, it aimed at identifying concrete steps at European level which would have a tangible impact on national level action towards zero segregation in education.

The first panel of the event focused on specific country examples of the challenges and structural obstacles in effectively addressing segregation in education at national level. As such, the panel introduced the results of the monitoring report on segregation in education done by CADO in 804 schools in Romania. It also presented the examples of Bulgaria and Spain in addressing segregation in education and promoting inclusive education within the project NOSEGREGATION financed by DG Justice.

The second panel looked at various European policy and financial instruments that EU Member States have at their disposal to effectively combat segregation in education and aimed to identify concrete paths to follow towards stronger European level advocacy and cooperation actions in order to effectively monitor and sanction segregation in education in line with existing European and international human rights standards. The panel also shared examples of cooperation models in the area of inclusive educational methodologies for schools and classrooms.

Romani Week 2022

Romani Week 2022 consisted of a series of events dedicated by the European Parliament to Romani People in Europe, the largest ethnic European minority and yet the most discriminated against. This year, Romani Week 2022 was organized from 16th to 19th May in the premises of the European Parliament, in Brussels. It aimed to debate the post 2020 policies for the equality and inclusion of Romani people. It called upon European Institutions and Member States to put the fight against antigypsyism at the fore front of social and economic efforts for the inclusion of Romani people and to ensure their participation in all domains of public life.
