The 18th edition of the “Person of the Year” human rights awards has launched
For the 18th consecutive year, the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (BHC) announces the start of the campaign for the annual human rights awards “Person of the Year”. This civic distinction is awarded to individuals, groups and organizations with an active contribution to the protection of human rights, animal rights and nature conservation in Bulgaria.
The nomination campaign will run from October 15 to November 15, 2025. Anyone can submit a proposal for nomination of people or initiatives that have had a significant impact in socially important areas related to rights and freedoms over the past year.

About the awards
“Person of the Year” is an initiative that aims to give public recognition and visibility to those who, through their actions, contribute to a more just and humane society. The awards are awarded for specific merits within the past year and are an expression of moral, not material, support – the awards have no financial value.
As in previous years, the winners will be selected by an independent jury composed of experts and public figures with experience in human rights work. The award ceremony will be held on the eve of December 10, International Human Rights Day.
Previous award winner
In 2024, the grand prize “Person of the Year” was awarded to Judge Vladislava Tsarigradska for her consistent work in the fight against corruption and in defending the rule of law and human rights in the judicial system.
Criteria and participation
The awards recognize people and organizations that:
- They create significant precedents in the field of rights protection;
- They work actively for change and social progress;
- They protect the interests of vulnerable groups;
- They contribute to the protection of nature and animal rights
